My journey into the world of art dolls began as a kid with a pair of scissors and a pack of construction paper. I could sit for hours and entertain myself with the characters that I cut out. I would make up stories and create a whole world for my paper-cut characters to live in.
While my materials have become more sophisticated, my imagination still runs in the same vein. How I wish my pets could talk to me! How I wish to fly on the back of a ladybug or catch a gnome hiding under a toadstool!
I believe in the importance of imaginative play. Being able to be creative is one of the first steps to solving a problem. If a child can’t think of different ways to solve a problem, then their thought processes become inflexible. We all know people who melt down at the first sign of something not going exactly the way they thought it would. Imaginative play lets children experiment with what might happen if they choose one thing over another. It lets them experiment with real world situations in a safe environment. Reading fiction books has a similar effect.Do you want the children around you to be flexible, creative thinkers? Then there’s only one thing to do.
